The underground of the safe house was twice as big as the building above it. There were too many officers, too many people running around, even though it was past eight p.m. now. They all made Zorro extremely uncomfortable, so he stuck closer to me than usual. The officers who escorted us looked back every few seconds to make sure we were still there. I pretended not to notice, but for once, I saw everything around me, every small movement, scent and sound. It was exhilarating, like I was finally putting to use all that came with my nature, and I was appreciating it properly.

Like I did at the museum, with Kallista. I swear, every time her heartbeat sped up, it was a new level of high for me.

When I showed the informants my ID, they opened the doors for me without question. They knew who I was, who my father had been, and that was enough to get me through security without so much as a word. Ira stayed a step behind me, head down but eyes alert. He knew the plan, so he was watching every exit point, everything he needed to know to disappear from here quickly, in case things got messy. I could survive getting caught. He couldn’t.

The Guild classified their most dangerous possessions under different names. The one we were looking for, Odin, apparently, was one that stored objects that had recorded the highest amount of magical charge in the Guild’s measurement tools. The officers took us to the left wing of the building, on the second floor underground, with at least fifty hearts beating behind the many doors in the corridors in front of us.

When they brought us in front of one of the doors down the third corridor, they knocked and stepped to the side, to make way for us to enter.

The door opened, and a man greeted us with a smile on his face and sweat beads lining his forehead. His heart was beating erratically, too. Did we make him that nervous, I wondered?

“Hello,” he said almost breathlessly. “Hi, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Dr. Amison.” He offered a hand, and I shook it.

“Hello, Dr. Amison. I’m Alexander King, and this is my friend Ira. That little guy is Zorro, my familiar. So sorry to trouble you so late.” I offered him the most genuine smile I could muster.

“Oh, no, of course not! Come on in,” he said and made way for us to enter.

Just like the rest of the building, the foyer we were in was made of dark grey tiles on the floor and bare crisp white walls. The overhead lights could make you dizzy if you stared at them for too long, and the air smelled like alcohol and something else I couldn’t place—perhaps a magic spell used to sterilize everything around here. I would imagine that was a necessary precaution, knowing what they kept in this place.

“A vampire with a familiar—how strange,” he mumbled, almost to himself. “I’m so sorry, I wasn’t really expecting you.
